When you have full dentures –the traditional type that you remove to clean – your lower plate might not fit as well as your upper. This is because your upper can cover more of your mouth’s surface (your palate), which leads to better suction.
Your lower, on the other hand, is U-shaped to accommodate your tongue. There isn’t much surface area for suction: even if your dentist does a fantastic job with your teeth, you might still have a loose lower. This can be extremely frustrating because the denture likes to shift when you eat or talk. Another problem is the resulting sore spots: the raw, uncomfortable areas where the denture and your mouth rub against each other.
There are, fortunately, ways to deal with a loose lower denture. Some are fast and inexpensive, while others take time and money. You can read these suggestions to figure out which options you should try, or discuss with your dentist.
Ideally, you should visit your dentist regularly for adjustments. Sometimes, your denture needs to be relined as well. These procedures can, and often do, make your teeth fit your mouth more tightly. This snugger fit makes you more comfortable, increases the number of foods you can easily eat and makes you more confident when you smile or talk.
You can also try over-the-counter adhesives. Denture glue is inexpensive and very easy to apply. However, using too much can make the adhesive ooze over your dentures. This tastes terrible, even when you’ve opted to buy the mint-flavored glue.
Adhesive pads are another option. These require more time and patience because you must dry the insides of your dentures; trim the pads to fit into them, then put everything into your mouth. However, these pads can make your lower dentures fit more snugly against your gums, making them worth the effort you make every morning.
These are the relatively-inexpensive options. The more-expensive solutions take more time and, of course, money. However, they can be well worth the investments because they tend to work well for long periods of time.
Having a new set of dentures made, for example, is important if your current set is not relatively new. You should also have your teeth repaired or replaced if they are damaged or broken, as these problems affect the fit.
Sometimes, your dentist can use the false teeth in your current dentures to make the new set. This can save you money and build your confidence because, if the dentist can use the same teeth, nobody will notice that something is different about your smile.
Another option is to switch to implant-supported dentures. There is more than one type of denture implant, so you should consult with a specialist to determine which procedure is best for your needs. These implants can be expensive, but the hardware often gives patients a stable, tight fit. If this is an option for you, you might find that you’re able to eat more types of foods. These setups can also be more comfortable – and some don’t require you to remove the teeth for daily cleaning.
Oftentimes, you will have to visit the dentist to fix your loose lower. However, this is usually worth the time, especially if your dentist is very knowledgeable about dentures, because he or she can do a few things to make you more comfortable and confident.
